Be a Part of Something Bigger

The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy improves the human condition through leadership in education, research, clinical care, and public service. We train the professionals who work to secure the health, well-being, and just treatment of Maryland’s citizens. We create the knowledge that cures disease and strengthens communities, locally and globally. We develop the practitioners and innovators who drive discovery and fuel economic growth.

THE EXPERIENCE

Our students are prepared for practice through a contemporary curriculum, innovative educational experiences, and a focus on collaborative partnerships. The experiential curriculum begins with an emphasis on pharmacists’ roles, progresses to a consideration of persons as patients, and then explores population-based concepts in practice.

INTERPROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

There is a push in the United States for patient care to be provided by interdisciplinary teams of health care professionals.  The University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is uniquely positioned to facilitate this collaborative approach.

The School is part of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, the state's only public academic health, human services, and law campus. Students and faculty from the Schools of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, and the Graduate School learn together in a variety of interprofessional educational experiences designed to improve the safety and quality of patient care.

The Center for Interprofessional Education, launched in 2013, advances UMB’s vision for preparing all University students to provide high-quality, affordable health care and human services within a team-based model.  The pharmacist is the medication expert on that team, providing guidance and recommendations on the appropriate use of medications to treat diseases and illnesses.

COMMUNITY CARE

Service is UMB’s lifeblood.  The mission of the Office of Community Engagement is to leverage UMB’s economic resources and human capital to engage with the community through direct service and systemic change to improve quality of life in West Baltimore and beyond.  In addition, many of our student organizations have community service and outreach opportunities.

Our students, faculty, and staff dedicate 2 million hours in volunteer service to Marylanders each year, and we annually provide nearly $40 million in uncompensated care to the poor and underserved.

GLOBAL EDUCATION

The School works with the UM Student Center for Global Education to raise awareness and foster a global experience by encouraging international faculty collaborations and promoting experiential learning opportunities for students. Last year, School of Pharmacy students completed clinical rotations and projects in Australia, Egypt, India, Italy, Peru, Thailand, South Korea, Costa Rico, Rwanda, Gambia, and Zambia.
